Alumni Coordinator’s Letter: 40 Years on Springdale Road

The 2018–19 school year marks our 40th year on the Springdale Road campus. A milestone like this offers an opportunity to reflect, giving me a chance to think about how far KCD has come.

In 1979, our “new” campus was located “way out in the country,” with farmers and cows as our neighbors. Trees that dotted the interior of campus were small and unassuming. One building served as the home for the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. The Commons served not only as the lunch room, but also as a space for meetings, dances, plays, and concerts.

Now our neighbors include subdivisions, shops, and restaurants. Our trees are mature and enhance our beautiful campus. As we’ve grown, we’ve added a fine arts wing, second gym, new upper school building, and fantastic athletic facilities. With the addition of the beautiful new KCD Theater, the Commons is now used primarily for dining.

However, what has not changed is our commitment to academic excellence and extracurricular engagement that has been at the foundation of Kentucky Country Day since the beginning. Our teachers and students are among the top in the region. Our athletes perform competitively on the fields and court. Our fine arts electives are wide ranging and cater to the needs of our student body. A current KCD student is still offered an education that extends outside the classroom to foster a love of learning and curiosity, just as it was 40 years ago.

If you haven’t had a chance to come out and visit us recently, please plan to do so. We’d love to take you on a tour and show you all the wonderful ways our students are growing and learning!
Don’t forget to follow us on social media. The @kcdschool and @kcdalumni Instagram pages and the Kentucky Country Day School Facebook page are updated regularly. All of these social media avenues are great ways to catch a glimpse of KCD students and faculty in action. Who knows—you may even see some recognizable faces of the past with Throwback Thursdays! I highly recommend you start following us—you’ll love what you see!

As always, please keep us updated on what is happening in your life, with your family, and with your classmates by submitting updates on the alumni page of the website.
